Since July 20, 1999, students who practice Falun Gong have been
systematically persecuted by authorities of Lanzhou University, using methods
such as expulsions and suspensions from school, detention, as well as
torture. They were persecuted for
exercising their basic rights:
for petitioning to the government for the right to
practice Falun Gong, for continuing the practice of Falun Gong, for refusing to
agree to give up practicing Falun Gong, or a combination of the above.

A Brief
Report of the Incident:
On January 12, 2001, during winter vacation, local
police broke into the home of Ms. Tan Xiaorong’s
at Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province.
The police ransacked the house, confiscated her Falun Gong books and
exercise-music tapes, her personal belongings including computer and printer,
and arrested her. She was detained in the guest lodging
units of Xuzhou Teachers University. On January 23, 2001, she was escorted back
to Lanzhou University. There she
was locked up in a basement and forced to attend anti-Falun Gong brainwashing
sessions. She was not allowed to take classes.
On June 2, 2001,
she was suspended from Lanzhou University for distributing Falun Gong
materials and was sent to Dingxi Police Station and
detained until June 13, 2001. While
she was in detention, the police and university security personnel ransacked her
dormitory on June 5, 2001. After
the university police took her back from the local police station, she was sent
to the Xiguoyuan Detention Center.
In the Xiguoyuan
Detention Center, more than ten people were crowded together in a cell less than
90 square feet. Ms. Tan had been detained there for a long time without any
change of clothes. She had lice in her hair and on her body and the smell in the
cell was unbearable. The weather had been very hot and humid, but the police
intentionally limited the amount of water available to her.

current situation is unknown.

On December 2, 1999, Mr. Xue Liuyan
went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun
Gong. He was arrested police and
detained for 15 days. Because of
this, he was suspended from Lanzhou University for a year. On December 25, 2000,
he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. On January 1, 2001, he went to Tiananmen
Square with fellow practitioners and has been missing ever since.

On December 2, 1999, Mr. Wang Yunbo
went to Beijing to appeal to the central government to stop the persecution of
Falun Gong. After he was sent back to the university, the University Police
detained him for 15 days for “Disturbing Social Stability.” Then he was
suspended from Lanzhou University for a year. In late March 2001, he was
arrested by police from the Qilihe Police Substation of Lanzhou City and was
taken to the Xiguoyuan Detention Center.

On December 2, 1999, Mr. Zhu Gaofeng
was suspended for one year from Lanzhou University after appealing to the
government to stop its persecution of Falun Gong. At the end of the suspension period,
authorities of the university forced him to write a statement to renounce Falun
Gong. When Mr. Zhu refused to
comply, he was expelled from Lanzhou University. On June 2, 2001, he was arrested and
detained Dingxi Police Station until June 13, 2001, for distributing Falun Gong
materials. He was later sent
to the Xiguoyuan Detention Center.

Brief Report of the Incident:
In December 1999, Mr. Chen Duoju went to Beijing to appeal to
government to stop the persecution
of Falun Gong. After he was sent back to school, the university authorities
detained him for 15 days and suspended him from Lanzhou University for one year.
On March 2, 2001, after returning to school, his department leaders illegally
locked him up and forced him to attend anti-Falun Gong brainwashing
sessions. He managed to escaped
from the police and school authorities, but was arrested in late March 2001 by police from Qilihe Police Substation
of Lanzhou City. He was later
transferred to the Xiguoyuan Detention Center.

Brief Report of the Incident:
On June 7, 2001, Ms. Wang Hongmei was arrested by the
Lanzhou University Police because she refused to stop practicing Falun Gong. She
was sent to the Taoshuping Detention Center. During her detention, she went on a
hunger strike to protest her detention.
Because she was pregnant, Lanzhou University brought her back and placed
her under surveillance. Since she refused to renounce Falun Gong, they sent her
back to the detention center. In order to keep her in the detention center for a
long detention term, police subjected her to a forced abortion. She is now
detained at unit 14 in the Lanzhou City Xiguoyuan Detention Center. Her rights
to continue her education in Lanzhou University have been deprived ever
since.

Brief Report of the Incident:
On October 27, 1999, Mr. Wan Jiqiang went to the Appeal
Office of the State Council in Beijing to petition to the government to stop its
persecution of Falun Gong. He was arrested there, escorted back to Lanzhou, and
detained in a detention center for 15 days. He was expelled from Lanzhou University
for refusing to renounce Falun Gong.
On December 31, 2000, he again petitioned the government to stop its
persecution of Falun Gong in Tiananmen Square in Beijing and was again arrested.
While in the detention center, the police used various ways to torture him,
including electric shocks and forcing him to remain outdoors in extremely cold
weather for prolonged periods of time. Mr. Wan was then escorted back from
Beijing by Lanzhou police and detained for another 15 days. After the 15-day
detention ended, authorities from Lanzhou University locked him up in a basement
and forced him to attend an anti-Falun Gong brainwashing class and forced him to
renounce Falun Gong.
To protest
the treatments, Mr. Wan went on a hunger strike for three days. Officers from
the university security section force-fed him. His current situation is unknown.
