Print  E-mail

Ms. Chen Guijun was a 59-year-old woman who lived in the Qingbaijiang District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. Ms. Chen was detained from October 22 to November 2, 1999, because she did the Falun Gong exercises in public. After her release, she went to Beijing to appeal her detention. As a result, she was arrested and detained for an additional 45 days from November 17, 1999, to January 2, 2000.

In July 2000, Ms. Chen was arrested and sent for forced brainwashing for 10 days. After her release, she was forced to leave home to avoid further persecution. On April 25, 2001, Ms. Chen was arrested again, when she stopped briefly at home. She was sentenced to one and a half years of forced labor at the Xindu Detention Center.

On December 19, 2001, Ms. Chen was sent to the Nanmusi Women's Labor Camp in Zizhong City, Sichuan Province. She went on a hunger strike for 28 days to protest her detention. In the course of being force-fed, two of her teeth were knocked out. Ms. Chen wasn't released until her health was in grave danger. After she returned home on January 12, 2002, she was placed under house arrest for a long time. The police tracked and monitored her comings and goings, as well as the visitors to her home.

On April 14, 2003, Ms. Chen, along with several Falun Gong practitioners, was arrested at home. After interrogating and torturing her in a separate room for one month, the police brigade of the Qingbaijiang District Police Department, along with the "610 Office," transferred Ms. Chen to the Pi County Detention Center in Chengdu City. There, she was often beaten. On September 26, 2003, Ms. Chen began a hunger strike to protest her torture.

On October 28, 2003, during Ms. Chen’s hunger strike, the People's Court in Qingbaijiang District secretly sentenced her to 9 years in prison. Ms. Chen continued her hunger strike. When she was on the verge of death, she was secretly transferred to the Qingyang District People's Hospital in Chengdu City for emergency treatment.

At the beginning of December 2003, the hospital issued an announcement that Ms. Chen was near death. However, the detention center rejected her family’s request for her medical parole. She passed away on December 21, 2003. At the time of her death, Ms. Chen only weighed approximately 60 lbs, comparing to her normal weight of 145 lbs prior to her arrest. On December 24, her body was sent for immediate cremation without her family’s consent.
