Ms. Su Juzhen, who is in her 40’s, lived in Gucheng, Qiansuo Town, Suizhong County, Huludao City, Liaoning Province. Prior to practicing Falun Gong, Ms. Su suffered from severe heart disease, stomach disease, tapeworms, pancreatic infection, and her legs were often swollen. In 1996, soon after Ms. Su began practicing Falun Gong, all of her illnesses disappeared.
Before the persecution of Falun Gong began, Ms. Su was well known for her selflessness and kindness. She owned a beauty salon and lived a frugal life; however, she never hesitated to share with those who needed help. Ms. Su donated her services to poor customers who were unable to pay and frequently gave them money. She was awarded with the distinction of "Outstanding Self-employed Businessperson" several times. Additionally, Ms. Su often provided financial assistance to poor students. In recognition of her selfless deeds, the principal of Qiansuo No. 3 High School once personally delivered a silk banner to her. Ms. Su often visited elderly people in nursing homes bringing them daily necessities and food. She also donated money to repair the Xihe Bridge. Her family was recognized as one of the "Ten Outstanding Families in Huludao City." She credited her practice of Falun Gong for being able to accomplish so many good deeds.
Ms. Su was targeted for persecution by the authorities because she refused to give up her practice of Falun Gong. Right after the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners began in July 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal for its end, but was intercepted by police and escorted back to her hometown. In August 1999, Ms. Su again went to Beijing to appeal to end the persecution, but this time and the police detained her to the Suizhong Detention Center. The police also confiscated 2,000 Yuan cash from her.
On October 31, 1999, Ms. Su was seized by authorities and sent to the Masanjia Labor Camp. She was later transferred to Zhangshi Labor Camp, a youth correction facility, and then transferred again to the Longshan Labor Camp, Shenxin Labor Camp, Dabei Prison, and other places, where she underwent extreme torture.
During the 2002 Chinese New Year, Ms. Su's family received a notice from the labor camp requesting a payment of 1,500 Yuan to cover "medical expenses" before they could take Ms. Su home. However, the real reason they wanted to release her was because she was mentally traumatized at the time as a result of severe torture. Her limbs were weak; her eyes unfocused and non-blinking and she had a blank expression on her face. She was unable to eat for 22 days after returning home. Her family later discovered unhealed wounds around her genitals, and there were needle punctures on her body.
To date, Ms. Su is still unable to speak or think normally. The entire family has suffered financially and emotionally because of the mental and physical injuries caused by the torture. Despite these circumstances, the authorities and police officers from Suizhong continue to harass the family.
Following is information from those who witnessed Ms. Su’s savage torture during her detention:
"With orders from guards Qiu Ping and Su Jing, Falun Gong practitioners Zou Guirong and Su Juzhen were brutally tortured. Those instigated to torture her pushed Su Juzhen's head down toward her crotch and stuffed her mouth with a towel so she could not scream. Then they jabbed her fingers with needles and shocked her with three electric batons. The torturers saw that Zou Guirong and Su Juzhen would not renounce their belief in Falun Gong, so they sent them to an underground hospital in Shenyang City, where the practitioners were abused further with forced injections of drugs. The two practitioners persisted in their belief in Falun Gong."
Another incident of torture is described below:
"Falun Gong practitioner Su Juzhen was summoned to the confinement room, where she was forced to take off all her clothes and the authorities shocked her with electric batons all over her body. The torture went on for an entire night. When she came to the workshop afterwards, I saw that her face was full of large blisters from the shocking, and there were also blisters on her lips. Her face was badly swollen and covered with bruises, and I could not bear to take another look at her."
"One day the Brigade Leader told me to visit Su Juzhen. I found that she could neither smile nor speak. Her expressionless eyes were staring ahead and her pupils were dilated without any reaction whatsoever. I greeted her and touched her, but there was no response. It seemed that she did not know me. Her whole body was very fragile and traces of blood were visible on her face. There were black and red dots on the backs of her hands, which were the scars from electric shocks. I knew “Auntie” Su had once been a mentally healthy person, but the Brigade Leader had forced her to take some kind of powerful drugs. I remembered that she seemed to be crippled when walking lately. It was obvious that her legs were injured. It was confirmed later that the crippling was caused by severe beatings and forced squatting for extended lengths of time… Various cruel methods of torture were used. If they saw that these torture methods were not working, they invented even more cruel torture methods…”
"One day the police again summoned (Ms. Su) Juzhen to their office. All I could hear was the crackling noises of the electric batons. A little while later someone came out of the office, and I caught the sight of Juzhen tied to a bedpost. They kept her there for two days and one night without allowing her to eat, sleep, or go to the toilet. When she was finally released, several people carried her since her legs were so weak. Since then she seldom went out for the morning roll call, and her movements were under close surveillance. The labor camp did not stop torturing her until she became totally disabled. When she was finally released from the camp, she could not move by herself, nor could she utter a word." |
