Description:
In 1997, Hu Zhiming received his Master’s degree from the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) Air Force Engineering Academy in Xi’an and started working at the Beijing Air Force Research Laboratory of Training Equipment.
In March 2000, in connection with the ongoing National People’s Congress Session and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, all units of the PLA Air Force placed Falun Gong practitioners under house arrest. To avoid detention, Hu Zhiming left work for a few days. However, using his telephone records, secret agents found and arrested him at a practitioner’s home in Wenquan (Hot Spring) Garden, Changping District, Beijing. Hu was detained in the Xishan Air Force Base in Beijing and placed under a 24-hour close watch. During his detention, Hu Zhiming’s family members called his work unit to ask his whereabouts, but his work unit denied any knowledge of his absence and, in turn, demanded that his family return him to work!
Throughout his detention, Hu Zhiming was confined to one room. He was constantly harassed by the Air Force personnel and coerced to give up his practice of Falun Gong. Hu was guarded 24 hours a day by soldiers. He refused to give up Falun practice and, since there was no reason to indict him for any criminal activity, the Air Force escorted him back to his home province where he received a “general discharge.”
Concerned that he would be persecuted by the local government, Hu Zhiming returned to Beijing at the end of May, 2000 to try and find a job there. In June, the military sent documents to the local government that Zhiming had been expelled from the Communist Party. After learning that Hu Zhiming was a Falun Gong practitioner, however, the government continued to go to his house and harass his family, demanding to know where he was in Beijing. From this point on, Hu Zhiming no longer returned home.
In September 2001, Hu was arrested in Shanghai with other Falun Gong practitioners during a Falun Gong experience sharing meeting at a friend’s house. Since then, his family has lost all contact with him.
