Ms. Deng Shiying, female, 42, was a resident of Longtan District, Jilin City, Jilin Province. In February 2000, because Ms. Deng shared her experience of practicing Falun Gong with others, she was arrested and sent to the Heizuizi Women’s Labor Camp for one year of forced labor. During her detention, she went on a hunger strike to protest the detention. As a result, she was tortured and force-fed, which caused massive hemorrhaging in her stomach; she had difficulty eating and frequently vomited.

After her release, Ms. Deng was arrested again on September 15, 2002 because she distributed Falun Gong-related materials. She was then sentenced to seven years in prison and sent to the Jilin Province Women's Jail in early March 2003. During her detention in the jail, because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, guards ordered eight inmates to beat her daily. Despite she became very weak and hardly able to eat, guards force-fed her; as a result, she became weaker and weaker until finally she was unable to eat at all. She then had to rely on intravenous nourishment to maintain her life. Ms. Deng was barely able to remain conscious and suffered from frequent vomiting and extreme pain in her entire body. Her family members were not allowed to visit her during her detention.

On the morning of July 18, 2003, Ms. Deng’s family members were instructed to pick her up at the jail. At that time, Ms. Deng was already unconscious and close to death; she weighed only about 25 to 30 kg. Her family members sent her to a hospital for emergency treatment. The doctor told her family members that Ms. Deng’s vital organs had suffered severe injuries and failure; the gallbladder was destroyed, the cranial nerve had suffered from fibrosis, and the cerebellum had withered and calcified. The hospital could not save her. Ms. Deng passed away in the afternoon of July 19, 2003.
