On December 23, 2001 Mr. Li Chouren, a 40-year old farmer from Huangjiazhuang Village, Zengcun Town, Gaocheng City, Hebei Province was arrested because he practiced the Falun Gong exercises at a fellow practitioner's home. Police from the Gaocheng Public Security Bureau and the Zengcun Town Police Station took him and other practitioners to the Gaocheng City Detention Center where they were beaten, deprived of sleep, and tortured by being forced to stand for a long time, Riding an Airplane, and being forced to drink urine. Mr. Li became very weak from the torture, and his health deteriorated. The detention center, observing his condition, extorted 1500 Yuanfrom his sister's family before he was finally released. Mr. Li died ten days after his release.
The "Punishment by forcing to stand for a long time" means that the victim has to stand, facing a wall all day long. This abuse usually lasts several days. If someone cannot withstand the intensity of prolonged standing and loses consciousness, they will be force-fed with drugs or severely beaten. It is often combined with deprivation of food, water, sleep, and use of the toilet. See also The Falun Gong Report, 2003 (Falun Gong Human Rights Working Group, 92).
In this torture, the head is bent down until it cannot go down any further, while the hands are pulled up and held up to the highest point. The hips have to point up. One is forced to keep this position unchanged for a long time. The body is held in the position of an airplane, which is how this torture is named. Ibid., 92
