In October 2000, Xishanping Labor Camp officials designated a special squadron to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. The camp guards selected some criminal inmates to assist the squadron in torturing Falun Gong practitioners. Between 2 and 10 inmates would monitor and torture a single practitioner in turn, 24 hours a day. The police have been rewarded with promotions and monetary gains for successfully torturing Falun Gong practitioners to point where they will give up their belief.
Cao Xuanlu, male, 48, resident of Bishan County, Sichuan Province. On December 19, 2001, Mr. Cao protested to his illegal detention by refusing to wear a prisoner’s uniform. More than 20 labor camp guards and orderd inmates Dang Ping, He Weidong, Dan Ming, Xing Gongwen, and Xu Feng to brutally beat Mr. Cao to a point where he lost consciousness. Later, Mr. Cao was sent to the camp’s hospital for emergency treatment and regained consciousness approximately 60 hours later.
On January 9, 2002, Mr. Cao was returned to the squadron’s custody. The next day, Political Instructor, Xiao ordered two inmates to drag Mr. Cao into the courtyard to beat him. Mr. Cao’s body was covered with blood and mud as a result of the beating. He lost his consciousness and was again sent to the camp’s hospital. He received 13 stitches on his head. The following day, while Mr. Cao was still in a coma, the camp official announced that is prison term would be extended for two months because he was not willing to give up his belief in Falun Gong. Mr. Cao's prison term has been extended for a total of 11 months.
Xue Junhe, male, 66, retired, former employee of Chongqing Oil Equipment Factory, resident of Chongqing City, Sichuan Province. Because Mr. Xue would not renounce Falun Gong. On December 19, 2001, the guards and inmates drag Mr. Xue to the courtyard to torture him. The inmates jammed Mr. Xue's shoe into his mouth to prevent him from speaking, this badly injured his mouth. Several criminals forced him onto his belly: two inmates stomped on his head and strangled his neck, four inmates held his arms back, four inmates held his legs down, and several people severely assaulted his body. Mr. Xue’s right arm was broken from the beating. Later, when Mr. Xue went on hunger struck to protest his inhumane treatment, he was brutally force-fed. His nostrils were full of blood from the insertion of the force-feeding tube. Inmates urinated into the force-fed solution.
Zhang Shengquan, male, 43, resident of Guang’an County, Sichuan Province. On December 19, 2001, Mr. Zhang refused to wear the prisoner's uniform to protest his illegal detention. The camp guards ordered inmates to beat him. The beating severely injured Mr. Zhang’s sternum and heart muscle, causing internal hemorrhaging. Mr. Zhang lost consciousness and was resuscitated in the camp's hospital. Mr. Zhang was returned to the squad on January 16, 2002, before he had fully recovered from the beating. When Mr. Zhang was ordered to slander Falun Gong and he refused, the camp guards and inmates tortured him again, this time braking four of his teeth and one of his toes. Later, since Mr. Zhang refused to give up his belief in Falun Gong, the camp guards used various means to torture him including; sleep deprivation for several days in a row and prohibiting him from using the toilet for a whole day at a time.
Lû Jianjun, male, 26, resident of Dianjiang County, Sichuan Province. On February 20,
2002, when Mr. L û refused to read books that slandered the teachings of Falun Gong, the inmates were ordered to beat him. After the beating, Mr. L û ’s body was covered with wounds, his face had become disfigured, and he had lost vision in his left eye.
Zhang Quanliang, male, resident of Dadukou District, Chongqing City, Sichuan Province. During the past two years of forced detention, the camp guards have repeatedly tortured Mr. Zhang. Almost all the skin on his body is no longer intact, except for his face and hands. The toenails of both his big toes have been ripped off during torture sessions.. Mr. Zhang had suffered a torture called "hunger therapy", in which he was given less than one ounce of rice soup in the morning, less than three ounces of rice at noon and also in the evening.
