Mr. Wang Zhiming, male, 39, was a resident of Chaoyang District, Beijing, and a translator of the Import and Export Division of the China Garments Group Company. Since July 1999, Mr. Wang was arrested and detained many times because he practiced Falun Gong and appealed to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. To avoid further persecution, he went back to his hometown in Shanxi Province in July 2001. He was arrested several times there because he made Falun Gong materials. During his last detention, he went on a hunger strike for more than 60 days to protest the detention. He was tortured and force-fed; as a result, he became extremely weak. The police were afraid to assume responsibility for his death and sent him to a hospital. According to the doctor, due to the delay in treatment, Mr. Wang's brain had already withered. He died at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on July 22, 2003. |
