Ms. Xiao Yixia, 32, female, is a well-known artist and a resident of Jinan City, Shandong Province. Ms. Xiao and her husband, Mr. Zhou Ning, own an art studio, and an art school for the deaf and mute, in Jinan City, Shandong Province. They have received both awards and media attention for their work.

Description:

After the persecution of Falun Gong began on July 20, 1999, Ms. Xiao Yixia and her husband were subjected to various kinds of persecution because they refused to renounce their belief. In October of 1999, Ms. Xiao, who was then three months pregnant, traveled to Beijing with her husband to appeal to the central government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. They were arrested and brought back to the Baimashan Police Station, in their hometown of Jinan City, Shandong Province. They were detained there for several days. In January 2000, they were arrested again when they were visiting at a Falun Gong practitioner’s home. Her husband was detained at the Liuchangshan Detention Center in Jinan City and Ms. Xiao was put under supervision at home. The police ransacked their home twice. After Ms. Xiao’s husband was released, the couple left home to avoid further persecution.

In April 2004, Chinese National Security agents arrested Ms. Xiao again and sent her to the brainwashing center at the Weifang Industrial School. Since she insisted in her belief in Falun Gong, the director of the brainwashing center, Fu Jinbin, and other officials used many vicious means to mentally and physically torture her. In May 2004, an official whose surname is Wang hung her up in the air, with her arms spread in a V-shape, for more than two hours. Ms. Xiao lost consciousness and was sent to the Weifang Medical School Hospital for emergency treatment. Then she was brought back to the brainwashing center and subjected to further torture.

Ms. Xiao now suffers from hypothermia in her lower body and her legs are numb. She has developed convulsions due to the torture. She is extremely weak, can hardly walk, and is in critical condition.

We are very concerned about Ms. Xiao’s life and hereby request that the United Nations take urgent action to safeguard the life of Ms. Xiao.
