On January 24, 2000, Mr. Li Junchen, male, 46, resident of the Sixth Unit in West Yangzhuang Village, Shucai Town in Zhoukou City, Henan Province was arrested by the Zhoukou City Police Department for visiting a fellow Falun Gong practitioner and discussing Falun Gong. The police detained him in the Zhoukou City Detention Center and Shangshui Detention Center, where he was given only small amounts of food and was forced to carry out physical labor for more than ten hours each day. He was often beaten and cursed by the other detainees. Mr. Li was released after his family members paid more than 2,000 Yuan to the police.
On January 24, 2001, Mr. Li was taken from his home and detained in the village office. After a three-month detention, Mr. Li was then sent to the brainwashing center organized by the Zhoukou City “610 Office”. The people in charge of the brainwashing center forced Mr. Li to watch videotapes and books that slandered Falun Gong and its founder. After being released from the brainwashing center, Mr. Li was held in the Zhoukou City Detention Center because he refused to give up his belief in Falun Gong. He went on a hunger strike for eight days to protest his illegal persecution. He was forced to sleep on the cold cement floor and was kept in the dark without any natural light during the day. The food preparation was unsanitary and was not even thoroughly cooked. After 20 days of detention, he started to suffer from diarrhea. Then he began to lose weight, gradually becoming thinner and weaker and his health steadily deteriorated. However, the public security guards and the chief of the detention center turned a blind eye to Mr. Li’s suffering.
Mr. Li’s family members spent more than 700 Yuan to finally get him released on September 20, 2001. However, due to all the threats, harassment, several periods of detention and the financial burden, Mr. Li died on November 20, 2001.
