On February 28, 2003, Ms. Zheng Lanfeng, female, 39, resident of Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, was tortured to death.
July 20, 1999, Ms. Zheng Lanfeng was arrested for the first time, because she did the Falun Gong exercises in public. In November 2000, Ms. Zheng was arrested again, this time for distributing materials clarifying the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong. She refused to sign a letter denouncing Falun Gong, so she was sentenced to one year of forced labor. In November 2001, near the end of her sentence, she still refused to denounce Falun Gong, so her term was extended for three more months. Ms. Zheng Lanfeng protested by going on a hunger strike. As a result, she was released. On February 11, 2003, Ms. Zhang was arrested again for distributing flyers to clarify the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong, and was detained at the Hongshan District Police Department.
The police notified Ms. Zheng's family of her death on March 5, 2003, when her body was sent to Chifeng City's No. 3 Hospital. Her family found that her back was covered with many black and blue bruises, but the police didn't allow Zheng Lanfeng's colleagues and other people to see her body. During her funeral, two police cars were present at all times. |
