In the summer of 2002, Ms. Wang Xia was
sentenced to 7 years in a labor camp for telling people the truth about Falun
Gong. She was detained in the 1st Inner Mongolia Women’s Prison in Huhehaote
City. In order to cover up the persecution, guards there told Ms. Wang’s fellow
inmates that she was being detained for "illegally trading VCDs." Over the past
two years, Ms. Wang has gone on hunger strikes to protest her detention and to
show people that she was innocent. Over that time, the guards repeatedly force-fed her and tied her arms to a bed so she couldn't move. They left the force-feeding tubes in her esophagus and only cleaned them every 7 to 14 days. They also shocked her with electric batons, injected her with unknown drugs, andhung her up and beat her. Ms. Wang was tortured to the point of being in critical condition several times. Before she was detained, she weighed more than 120 pounds. As of July of 2004, she only weighed about 45 pounds and lapsed in and out of consciousness.
Ms. Wang's body was badly injured and deformed because she was tortured so severely in prison. The prison doctor said that she would only live about 2 or 3 more days. A person in charge of the prison said in front of several guards and a "610 Office" leader, "Move her to the mortuary for cremation!"
The "610 Office" leader replied, "We can't allow her to die in prison! Let her family take her back as soon as possible. As her story has been posted on the Internet, her death can be treated as a suicide if she dies at home."
On June 26, 2004, prison officials told Ms. Wang's father to come to the prison and take her home. At the time, she was unconscious, so her father took her to a hospital for emergency treatment. Ms. Wang, however, was forced to leave the hospital the following day. After returning home, Ms. Wang showed signs of mental disorder, so her family rushed her to the hospital again. After about 20 days, because her family didn't have enough money for the treatment, Ms. Wang was forced to leave the hospital. She now fades in and out of consciousness and shows signs of mental disorder. It is suspected that she was injected with harmful psychotropic drugs.
We are very concerned about Ms. Wang and hereby request an urgent action by the United Nations to safeguard her life.
