Internally Displaced Persons in Beijing City
Overview
Since July 20th, 1999, Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing City have been tortured and persecuted because of their beliefs. The police of Beijing arrested, detained, beat, and fined them. They were also fired from their jobs. They were threatened at home as well. To avoid being tortured further, practitioners left their homes and became displaced. Following are some of their stories:
1.1 Assistant Research Scientist Lin Chengtao Forced Leave Home

A Brief Report of the Incident:
On December 18, 2000, Lin Chengtao was arrested because the police suspected he distributed Falun Gong flyers. In April 2001, some personnel from his workplace and the 14th Division of the Beijing Police Station sent him into an Anti-Falun Gong Brainwashing Class near the Daxing Labor Camp because he refused to give up Falun Gong. On July 17, 2001, Mr. Li was arrested at the Beijing Train Station while he was waiting for his daughter. On August 12, 2001, he was detained in a hotel and was forced to live under constant surveillance. His workplace sent people to threaten him that he would loss of his job and loss of family if he refused to give up Falun Gong. On August 16, 2001, Mr. Lin escaped from the hotel and has gone into hiding to avoid further persecution by the authorities.

1.2 Associate Professor Dan Ling Had to Leave Home

A Brief Report of the Incident:
Dan Ling and eleven other experts from seven work units did a scientific research on the health of 12,731 Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing before Falun Gong was persecuted by the Government in July 1999. The result showed that the effect of disease recovery from practicing Falun Gong was as high as 99.1%. Ms. Dan was removed from her position by the school in July 1999 because she practices Falun Gong and took part in that research. On October 13, 1999, the police from the 14th Division of the Beijing Police Station arrested Ms. Dan. Afterwards, she received constant threaten from her school, and the police forced her to give up practicing Falun Gong. In early November 2000, the police threatened Ms. Dan again for renounce Falun Gong. In order to avoid being arrested again, she left her home. There has been no news whatsoever about her ever since.

A Brief Report of the Incident:
Since July 22, 1999, the local police kept disturbing Chen Zheng’s family. They were trying to force them to renounce Falun Gong. In early August 1999, Chen Zheng and his mother went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. They were arrested and escorted back home. In March 2000, his mother went to appeal in Beijing again and was detained for more than 20 days. On July 15, 2000, they went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong again. The policemen in the Tiananmen Square shoved them into a police van. While in the van, one policeman twisted Chen’s arms behind his back and then yanked on his ear. Chen felt so much pain that he cried loudly. The policemen beat Chen’s mother on her face, head and ears. Her face began swell. They were sent to the Tiananmen Police Station. In the Tiananmen Police Station, the police refused to give them any food and did not allow them to go to the bathroom. After their release they went to an old lady’s home to spend the night. But the local police came to check the home and took them into custody again and held them for three more days. After Chen and his mother returned home, the police threatened them that as long as they practice Falun Gong they would be detained again and again. They had no choice but to go into hiding to avoid being detained again.

1.4 After Forced Conversion Zhu Tong Had to Leave Home

A Brief Report of the Incident:
On October 27th, 1999, Zhu Tong was arrested and sent to the Beijing Dongcheng Detention Center for almost two months because she went to the Tiananmen Square to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. On December 14,1999, Ms. Zhu was transferred to the Detention Center of the 7th Branch of the Beijing Police Station. In the detention center, she was put in the same jail cell with convicts and murderers and other serious offenders. She was sentenced to an 18-month prison term.
On March 17, 2000, Ms. Zhu was transferred to the Beijing Women Jail to serve out her sentence. The food she ate in the jail was very bad. She was forced to keep running for a long time as a kind of punishment. The police sent various police stations officials, qigong masters, and psychiatrists to talk to her, trying to convince her to give up practicing Falun Gong. She was forced to either write a renounce Falun Gong statement or continue to receive severe mistreatment at the jail.
On March 28, 2001, Ms. Zhu was released from the jail. This was about one month ahead of the scheduled release date because the police wanted to show to the media that they had a model conversion case. Before her release, the police threatened her repeatedly with potential harm to her husband and other family members if she did not cooperate. After her release, the police continued to threaten her and tried to utilize her in propaganda against Falun Gong. However, she could not give up her faith in Falun Gong and in May 2001 she formally published on www.Minghui.ca her declaration of intention to continue practicing Falun Gong. She has since left home to avoid further persecution, leaving behind her husband and her son.

1.5 16-Year-Old Girl Forced to Leave China Due to Constant Harassment by Police

A Brief Report of the Incident:
Lily Wang and her parents are Falun Gong practitioners. Since Falun Gong was banned in July 1999, the family has been watched closely by local authorities. Her father, Mr. Wang was arrested on July 23, 1999 and detained for one month in a jail. After he was released, he was put on the local authorities’ blacklist and was ordered to report to police regularly. He was warned that if he was caught practicing Falun Gong, he would be sent to a jail or labor camp for at least 5 years. He eventually escaped from China, leaving behind Lily, her mother, grandmother, two sisters, and brother.
To avoid further persecution the family moved out of their home. The authorities found out about their move and went to Lily’s brother and sisters at school to threaten them into revealing where the family had moved to. The policemen found their new apartment and forbade the landlord from renting to the family so they were forced to stay with relatives.
Lily was sent to the UK to avoid further persecution. In February 2001, her family members were forced separated into 3 different countries.

'Why do they persecute us?'
The day after China banned the Falun Gong spiritual movement, Mr Wang, a mild-mannered businessman, went to Tiananmen Square to protest about the crackdown.
He was arrested and sent to a labour camp where he was repeatedly beaten. "When he came out his legs were swollen and he had bruising to his face," says his daughter Lily.
"They kept saying, 'Have you given up?' And he said no and they beat him."
Mr Wang was released after a month, but his name was added to a blacklist and he was warned he faced five years in jail if caught practising Falun Gong.
Last year he escaped to another country, but Lily won't say which.
Her mother was forced to go into hiding with her children, but the police tracked her down and now keep threatening to send her to jail.
She is under constant monitoring and the phone is bugged. "She is absolutely terrified," says Lily, 16, who now studies in London.
