Brief Description:
On May 11, 2003, the police from the Shapingba District Police Station arrested Ms. Wei Xingyan and several other Falun Gong practitioners from Chongqing University, on suspicion of hanging banners and balloons commemorating the World Falun Gong Day, which would be celebrated on May 13.
On the evening of May 13, 2003, several policemen took Ms. Wei to a cell in the Baihelin Detention Center in the Shapingba District, and ordered two female prisoners to strip Ms. Wei naked. One police officer raped her in the presence of the inmates. Ms. Wei went on a hunger strike to protest the abuse. The police punished her by violently force-feeding her, seriously inuring her trachea and esophagus, and leaving her in critical condition.
On May 22, 2003, on the verge of death, Ms. Wei was sent to the Southeast Hospital in Chongqing City. She was under heavy police surveillance. Anyone who attempted to visit her was interrogated and threatened with arrest. Ms. Wei has not been seen since then.
Steps taken to find Ms. Wei:
Since Ms. Wei’s case was exposed on the Internet on June 2, 2003, many people have tried to find her. The authorities, at the same time, have gone to great lengths to cover up the facts. The authorities first threatened all professors and students that knew Ms. Wei to not discuss or ask about her. All students who lived in the same dormitory room with Ms. Wei have been transferred to an undisclosed place. The authorities even changed the Internet web content of Chongqing University, removing all information about Ms. Wei’s field of study, so as to deny that there was ever a student named Ms. Wei Xingyan in Chongqing University.
Falun Gong practitioners from China and abroad, however, found out that Ms. Wei’s thesis advisor is Prof. Mou Daohuai. On August 3, to further interfere with and intimidate others who were trying to find Ms. Wei, the authorities arrested over ten Falun Gong practitioners from Chongqing University.
Due to the extremely tight information blockade, little else is known about Ms. Wei's current situation. We are very concerned about her life and hereby request an urgent action by the United Nations to safeguard Ms. Wei’s life. type=Case,Disapperance; type=Case,Women; location=Chongqing; |
