Description:

On April 9, 2002, policemen Zhou Hongchen, Wang Yuanjun, Wang Runlong, and a dozen others from the Donggang City Police Station arrested Ms. Liu Mei and her husband, Mr. Zhu Changming, for producing and distributing materials explaining the facts about the persecution of Falun Gong. Both were sentenced to 13 years in prison. Mr. Zhu was detained at the Dabei Prison. At the time of their arrest, Ms. Liu was handcuffed and placed in an unstable position in the moving police vehicle; as a result, she fell down and injured her head. The diagnosis revealed that she had a severe concussion.

Ms. Liu was taken to the First Division of the Dandong City Police Station, where the police tortured her continuously for two days and one night. They stripped off her clothes and shocked her body with electric batons; they also beat her head with hard plastic baton handles. She passed out from the torture. During her detention at the police station, she frequently had a high fever as a result of the severe concussion she had sustained at the time of her arrest. Her lungs were also damaged due to insufficient treatment during the high fever. After four months, she was transferred to the Donggang Detention Center. Despite her critical condition, the authorities at the detention center did not send her to a hospital for medical treatment; neither did they allow her family members to visit her. On November 4, 2002, she was transferred to the Dabei Prison in Shenyang City.

In the Dabei Prison, guards continued to torture her in an attempt to force her to give up Falun Gong. She refused. Her health continued to deteriorate. The authorities rejected her family members’ repeated requests to release her. Team Leader Zhang told her family members, “As long as she refuses to give up her belief, she will never leave here; if she dies, you can come here to claim her body.” On March 10, 2003, her mother was finally allowed to visit her. Ms. Liu was carried to the visiting room wearing a big gauze mask; she was extremely weak and her body was just skin and bones. When she spoke out with all her strength, “Mom, I am dying…” the guards immediately stopped the meeting. Since then, her family members have received no further information about her.

We are very concerned about Ms. Liu’s life and hereby request an urgent action by the United Nations to safeguard the life of Ms. Liu.
