Print  E-mail

Ms. Zhang Jingyan, 41 years old, a peasant formerly living in Yongzhi Village, Shuangcheng Town, Shuangcheng City.

On July 22, 1999, Ms. Zhang Jingyan was arrested for appealing to her provincial government to end the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. She was detained for a day. On July 25, 1999, she was again arrested and then and detained a second time at the Shuangcheng Public Security Bureau. This detention lasted 25 days, during which police mentally and physically abused her, later ransacking her home. Later, she was released.

In January 2000, because Ms. Zhang appealed for Falun Gong in Beijing, she was detained for three months by the Shuangcheng “610 Office[1]”. Later she was locked up at Shuangcheng anti-Falun Gong brainwashing center for more than twenty days, during which her family was pressured into paying 6200 Yuan for her release. In June 2000, because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, Ms. Zhang was detained for more than eighty days. Throughout her detention she was often beaten by the Second Brigade of Shanhaiguan Criminal Police. Police pressured her family into paying them another 2800 Yuan before releasing her.

On April 19, 2002, Harbin City policemen broke into Ms. Zhang’s home in Huayuan District and abducted her. She was taken to Shuangcheng Public Security Bureau. While in the security bureau, police dragged her around by her hair, slapped her face, kicked her lower body, and stomped on her feet. She was transferred to the Second Brigade of the Criminal Team, who subjected her to extreme torture methods. On April 21, 2002, she was transferred to Harbin 2nd Detention Center.

Ms. Zhang Jingyan was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison. At present, she remains in detention.
