Description:
In September and October of 1999, the Police Department of Tsinghua University arrested Mr. Wang Weiyu after he attended two Falun Gong experience-sharing meetings. While Mr. Wang was in custody, the police forced him to squat for 4 to 5 hours and interrogated him until midnight. His university department, Precision Instruments and Machine Technology, later threatened him with expulsion without graduation and suspended him for two months; the suspension was later extended to four months. After that, he was sent to the home of his parents-in-law in Shanghai for "re-education." Wang Dongsheng, a faculty member in charge of the persecution of Falun Gong at the university, and Zhou Ruizeng went to Shanghai to coerce his father-in-law to "advise" him with threats of "expulsion from the Communist Party and school if Mr. Wang doesn't give up Falun Gong." In June of 2000 the school suspended him again. On July 22, 2000, the police arrested him while he was in Beijing's Tiananmen Square talking to someone. He was detained for a week without cause. He was finally dismissed from the school by the end of 2000.
Later, Mr. Wang found a job as an essential technical worker. Although he had already been dismissed from the school, the university and national security personnel had been tracking him down in order to send him to a brainwashing class and to force him to give up his belief. On August 12, 2002, plainclothes police abducted Mr. Wang while he was on his way to the train station. Since then his whereabouts had been unknown to his family until September 2003, when his family members were informed that Mr. Wang was being sued by Beijing City Chaoyang District People's Procuratorate and would be sentenced to several years in jail. His family members were not allowed to communicate with him.
Since Mr.Wang is facing an illegal trial and currently being detained in Beijing City Guanzhuang District Detention Center, we are very concerned about Mr. Wang’s well-being and hereby request an urgent action by the United Nations to protect Mr. Wang’s basic human rights.
