Description:
In December 1999, Professor Wu Xiaohua was detained for appealing in Beijing for the government to put an end to the persecution of Falun Gong. Ten days later, the university forced her to attend a brainwashing class in a suburb of Hefei City. Later, the brainwashing authorities sent her to the Anhui Female Detention Center, where she was brutally tortured.
In July 2000, she was secretly sent to No 4 People's Hospital of Hefei City, a mental hospital in Anhui Province. Neither her family nor the university was informed of her transfer. They discovered that she had been transported there only after the mental hospital asked for the money. In the mental hospital, she was forcibly given injections, force-fed drugs, and shocked with electric needles. The torture put her into a daze, in which she felt fidgety and in a trance - as if her head had a big metal pan covering it all of the time. One day, her hands were handcuffed behind her back and she was locked in a 150 square-meter bathhouse full of mosquitoes. She was locked in there from that afternoon until the following morning. When she needed to use toilet, the staff of the hospital pushed her into a pigpen full of spider webs. She was detained and tortured in the mental hospital for a total of fifty days.
In the end of April, 2001, Wu was again arrested while working at the university. She went on a hunger strike to protest her illegal arrest and was then force-fed by the police. When her health deteriorated as a result, she was released. By this time, the university had already terminated her teaching privilege.
In October 2001, during the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) meeting held in Shanghai, Wu was at first placed under house arrest and sent to a female labor camp again. There she was tortured in a variety of ways, including having her mouth stuffed with rags and tissue soaked in urine and menstrual blood.
To protest her illegal detention and the torture, she went on a hunger strike. In mid-October, 2001, on the tenth day of the hunger strike, she was again sent to the mental hospital in Hefei City. The doctors in the hospital insisted that she be stripped of her clothes and dressed in a patient uniform without specifying the "disease" or giving her any physical examinations. The nurses pressed her onto a bed, grabbed her hair, and stripped off her clothes. The doctors cursed her while cutting her underwear off with a pair of scissors. Then they tied her to a bed with her arms and legs stretched out, and shocked her with electric needles and an electric baton all over her body. The pain was beyond description. They then force-fed her and injected her with psychiatric drugs. These drugs caused her to feel muddleheaded and uneasy. During her detention at the mental hospital, she went on hunger strike three times, the longest one lasting 21 days. Doctor Li from the hospital said, "We are not afraid of you not eating. We have all the means. If you go on another hunger strike, we will electrically shock you until you become unconscious."
