Ms. Gong Zhihui is a 37 year old resident of Miyi County, Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province.

In August 2001, police from the Binggu Police Station of Miyi County arrested Ms. Gong while she was visiting practitioner Ms. Gao Nongying’s home. Policemen shackled Ms. Gong for two days and nights. She was not released until February 2002. 

Shortly after her release, the authorities of Panlian Township, Sichuang Province arrested Ms. Gong again. They took her to a local police station where Xiang Jinfa, the head of the political security section, hung Ms. Gong from the ceiling by her handcuffs for one hour and refused to let her to use the restroom. Then she was taken to the interrogation room where she was shackled for the entire night in a painful position, in which she could neither stand up nor squat.[1] By the next morning, Ms. Gong was too weak to stand up. The police officers notified her family, and they came to pick her up.

Not long after her second release, Ms. Gong appealed to the central government. She was arrested and detained at the Dongcheng District Detention Center in Beijing. The police tortured Ms. Gong by pulling her hair and banging her head against the wall, causing her to lose a large amount of hair. When Ms. Gong went on hunger strike to protest this inhuman treatment, the police instigated other inmates to kick and punch her. They also force-fed her with food and drugs while pinching her tendons and plugging her nose. As a result, Ms. Gong was unable to walk and two of her teeth were knocked out.

Ten days later, she was sent back to the Neijiang Detention Center in Sichuang Province and was detained there for approximately 37 days. Since she was vomiting blood every day, the police finally took her to the hospital where it was found that her heart was not getting an adequate supply of blood. Ms. Gong was losing her eyesight, and was on the verge of death. To avoid responsibility in the event that she passed away, the officials from the detention center released her. At that point, Ms. Gong, whose normal weight was over 110 lbs., weighed only 55 lbs.
