On October 1, 1999, Ms. Lu Guifang, a 63-year old retired chief accountant for the Yingkou Cigarette Factory in Liaoning Province, was arrested and detained for 15 days for going to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong, and for publicly saying "Falun Dafa is good."
On January 25, 2002, police officers from the National Security Bureau in Dalian City broke into her home and arrested her, her husband, and her son for practicing Falun Gong. She was sentenced to two years of forced labor; her husband was sentenced to three years of forced labor; and her son to one year of forced labor. She was detained at the Yaojia Detention Center in Dalian City. Although it was an extremely cold winter, she was forced to work and sleep without proper protection. She was unable to sleep without a quilt or cover. On March 8, 2003 she was transferred to the notorious Masanjia Labor Camp. There she was subjected to forced brainwashing and brutal physical attacks, which, along with tremendous psychological pressure, caused her vision to blur. The police forced her to sign the "three statements."
Due to the torture, and lack of proper care, she developed severe lower back pain, and was severely dehydrated. When her condition became so serious that the authorities recognized that she was on the brink of death, they sent her to a hospital for emergency treatment, but her condition did not improve. They sent an urgent notice to Ms. Lu's family around 4:00 p.m. on the same day, ordering them to pick her up immediately. When Ms. Lu's family arrived in the evening, the doctor tore up all the paperwork from Ms. Lu's physical exams and inspections. He refused to write anything about her condition, but forced her family to pay a 2,000 Yuan "deposit." After Ms. Lu was taken back to Yingkou City, she continued to suffer great pain and remained bedridden. She passed away on November 26, 2003.
