Guo Songmei Dies of Torture Endured in the Harbin Women’s Prison

Ms. Guo Songmei, female, was a Falun Gong practitioner who lived in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province. While being detained in Division Nine of the Harbin Women's Prison, she was subjected to torture. In the wintertime, practitioners were forced to do drills outside from morning until night. They also were also forced to sit on a freezing cold cement floor all day. In order to force practitioners to give up their beliefs, the guards often beat practitioners and shocked them with electric batons. Practitioners were forced to squat down all night along, and at most they could get two hours' sleep. Sometimes they were not given any food. The guards were also instructed to beat practitioners in places where the bruises would not show, such as their thighs. As a result of such treatment, Ms. Guo's whole body became swollen. Long-term force-feeding made her lungs badly bruised and abraded. On March 6, 2003, the prison released her in order to shirk responsibility for her rapidly declining condition. On May 8, two months after her release, Ms. Guo passed away.
