Ms. Sun Shouqi, 56, lived in Dingzhou City, Hebei Province. She had been detained at the Chengbei Detention Center in Dingzhou City since April 2002 because she practices Falun Gong. On June 1, 2003, Ms. Sun went on a hunger strike to protest her illegal detention. On June 3, police took her away. Over a dozen police officials and Liu Jianying, the head of the police department, pinned her down and tried to give her an injection.. The detention center head named He, pulled one of Ms. Sun's hands over on the bed and sat on it. Ms. Sun immediately felt excruciating pain and shouted, "Move over, my hand is about to break!" When Ms. Sun returned, she could not walk unassisted. Her right hand was wrapped in gauze. When she unwrapped the gauze, a wound more than one inch long was revealed. The bone was exposed and blood kept dripping from her hand. Later, Ms. Sun lost the ability to speak, her mouth foamed, and she became incontinent. She was admitted to the hospital at 1:00 a.m. on June 3. She died at 11:00 a.m. on June 4, 2003.
