Cui Zhengshu died as the result of torture
Ms. Cui Zhengshu, female, 36, mother of one, former resident in Chuanying District, Jilin City, Jilin Province.
After Falun Gong was banned in July 1999, Ms. Cui Zhengshu went to Beijing and appealed to the government to stop the persecution. She was arrested and detained in Beijing's Fengtai Stadium. Later, she was sent back to Jilin City. The police from the Chuanying District Zhihe police station searched her house.
On September 5, 1999, Ms. Cui traveled to Beijing again to peacefully appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. She was arrested and taken to Jilin City's "forced transformation training class," to be brainwashed for 15 days. She was then released. At approximately 9:00 a.m. on February 7, 2001, Ms. Cui and more than 200 other practitioners did the Falun Gong exercises in front of the Jilin City Hall as a form of appeal to the local government. Several hundred police officers arrested them. The police officers whipped Ms. Cui with a rubber hose to whip her, kicked her, and stepped on her with leather boots. Her head was disfigured after the beating. They then sentenced her to one year of forced labor at the No. 4 Division of the Heizuizi Labor Camp in Changchun City.
After she released from the labor camp, police instructor Jiang from the Chuanying Zhihe Police Station along with other policemen from the Chuanying District arrested her again and extorted 600 Yuan from her family. In March 2002, Ms. Cui was found to be making materials to clarify the truth about Falun Gong, the local authorities sentenced her to another three years of forced labor at the No. 4 Division of the Heizuizi Labor Camp in Changchun.
There, the police head, Zhang Guimei, and police officer, Zhang Xuesong, ordered inmates to abuse her physically and mentally. In 33 days they only allowed her to sleep for 22 hours. Although her condition was very serious, policewomen Zhang Guimei and Zhang Xuesong still directed further torture on her.
By April 2003, Ms. Cui's condition had become so serious that she had difficulty eating food and taking care of herself. Afraid that she might die in the labor camp, the Heizuizi Female Labor Camp officials released her on April 18, 2003.
After arriving home Ms. Cui's condition continued to deteriorate. She could not walk, had constant pain, was unable to keep any food down, coughed day and night, and lost all sensation in her hands and feet. By early August 2003, she could no longer move at all, lost all hearing, and could not swallow anything. She weighed only 60 lbs. Ms. Cui Zhengshu died at approximately 9:00 a.m. on August 12, 2003.
