On March 27, 2003, Mr. Li Jianhou, a 67-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, was tortured to death in the Deyang Prison in Sichuan Province. He worked as the deputy manager general and secretary of the Party Committee of the Nanchong Municipal Agricultural Trade Company. He was also a committee member of the Nanchong People's Political Consultative Commission.
Mr. Li had been arrested and imprisoned four times by the local “610 Office”. In July 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. As a result, he was detained for 15 days. In January 2001, he was sentenced to one year of forced labor. In November 2001, because he explained the facts about Falun Gong and the persecution to people, he was detained. In June 2002, the “610 Office” arrested him again. On December 23, 2002, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison and held in Deyang Prison in Sichuan Province. On March 27, 2003, he was tortured to death in the Prison.
Mr. Li Jianhou's wife, Ms. Zhang Qingfen, also a practitioner, had been arrested by the local “610 Office” three times and sentenced to one year of forced labor.
