Ms. Bai Shihua, female, 32, was employed by the Steel and Iron Factory of the Laiwu City Steel and Iron Corporation in Shandong Province and resided in the company’s dormitory in the Wanliuyuan Residential Area.
Ms. Bai went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong on January 1, 2000 and May 8, 2000, respectively. She was detained for more than 10 days each time, and extorted of 5, 000 Yuan.
In order to force her to give up her belief, from July 2000 to July 2001, Ms. Bai was subject to five different brainwashing sessions at her workplace, the No. 2 Women’s Labor Camp in Jinan City, and the Wangcun Women’s Labor Camp. She went on hunger strikes to protest the detention and was deprived of sleep, force-fed, and tortured. As a result of the physical and mental torture, she suffered a mental breakdown in April 2001. She was sent home on July 24, 2001.
In November of 2002, Ms. Bai’s former employer detained her and her husband Zhang Shengwei and forced them to undergo a brainwashing session again. Due to the incessant mental and physical torture she endured over the course of three years, Ms. Bai’s health deteriorated quickly and she passed away early on the morning of March 13, 2003, leaving behind her aging parents and a 10-year old daughter.
