Ms. Yu Qiushi, female, 64, a resident of Zhenlai County, Jilin Province. Police arrested Ms. Yu on December 21, 2001 and sent her to the Zhenlai County Detention Center at Jilin Province. In the detention center, she refused to give up her belief in Falun Gong and held a hunger strike. On the eighth day of the hunger strike, the director of the detention center ordered a doctor from the county hospital to force-feed Yu Qiushi. She was fed raw corn meal mixed with salt water. A female guard said: “Add more salt water, add more salt.” She was tortured by the force-feeding, before the tube was pulled out from one nostril, the other nostril had begun to bleed. That afternoon, Ms. Yu threw up constantly, vomiting all of the dirty food she had been fed. That same night, Ms. Yu had blood in her stool. On the 11th day of her hunger strike, the director of the detention center sent Ms. Yu to the county hospital. At the hospital, Ms. Yu was injected with an unknown drug that caused her abdomen to swell. Her family was not allowed to take her home until she was on the verge of death.
