During the detention, Mr. Chai was beaten many times for practicing Falun Gong exercises. He went on a hunger strike for over 20 days to protest the persecution and his illegal incarceration. Later, Mr. Chai was sentenced to one and a half years in a forced labor camp.
In the labor camp, Mr. Chai was again tortured repeatedly and severely injured. Around New Year's Day of 2001, a tumor was found in his abdomen.
