A brief description of the incident:

On October 17, 1999, Ding Yan was arrested and detained in the Tiananmen Police Substation for admitting she was a Falun Gong practitioner.

Ms. Ding was one of the principal organizers of the Falun Gong press conference in Beijing on October 28, 1999 and the Falun Gong conference in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province on November 25, 1999. She was arrested and detained at Jiaqiaole Street Detention Center on November 25, 1999 in Guangzhou City. In June 2000, Ms. Ding was sentenced to 3 years in prison.

Ms. Ding had been detained in many different places, including the Jiaqiaole Street Detention Center in Guangzhou City, Shijiazhuang Detention Center in Shijiazhuang City, Shijiazhuang City Second Prison, the Baoding City Taihang Prison, and the 5^th Section of Chengde City Prison.

While incarcerated in different places, Ms. Ding suffered various tortures by the police, including forced hard labor up to 21 hours a day, shackled very tightly, hung from hands shackled to the back, etc.  In Shijiazhuang Detention Center, Ms. Ding was caged in an iron cage inside which is the wooden floor with nails sticking up more than an inch. 

Ding Yan was last held at the Chengde City Prison. The prison guards subjected Ms. Ding Yan to the torture of "water jail", where one was stripped naked, and locked in iron cage with spikes on all sides, and soaked in dirty water up to the neck.  Ms. Ding died in September 2001, after months of torture in the "water jail."
