A brief report of the incident:
On July 19, 2001, Yang Ruiyu was taken away from her work at around 10:00 am by the police from the Public Security Bureau of Fuzhou City. While detained between July 19 and July 22, Yang Ruiyu had not been allowed to sleep. Yang Ruiyu was tortured to death on July 22, 2001.
After Yang Ruiyu's death, the police used heavy pressure to threaten Yang Ruiyu's family not to leak information. In addition, Yang Ruiyu's colleagues were not allowed to see her one last time and no funeral was permitted either. When the body was sent for cremation, it was guarded by police cars and was cremated immediately upon arrival. Even Yang Ruiyu's husband and daughter were not allowed to see the body.
