A brief report of the incident:
At about 7 am on June 9, 2001, according to witnesses, four or five people from Red Flag Police Substation broke into Zhang Shengfan's home and tried to take him away. Zhang Shengfan was still in bed at that time.
Hearing the commotion, about two dozen onlookers from the neighborhood gathered and watched everything through the window of Zhang Shengfan's house. They saw Zhang Shengfan desperately holding on to a bench. The police used so much force that the back of the seat was pulled off. Zhang Shengfan resisted throughout with all his strength, and the police had to drag him out along with the bench.
Witnesses said they saw several policemen throw Zhang Shengfan into a vehicle. He struggled to get out, only to be kicked back in. His head was forcefully pushed under the seat of the van, with his neck bent and his body flattened under the seat.
Witnesses also reported that the police manhandled Zhang Shengfan, a disabled person, "as if he were a sparrow." Even as the van departed, they saw several people were still pummeling him inside the van in frenzy. When the police vehicle arrived at the Shuangcheng detention center, onlookers saw a battered body unloaded from it.
On June 12th, Zhang Shengfan was sent to a hospital for emergency treatment at 9:50 am, after the detention guards and three prisoners force-fed him with three large bottles of hard liquor. Doctors said the man was dead before he arrived.
It was not until 8:00 am of June 13th did Zhang Shengfan's family receive notification of Zhang’s death, and the local authorities disallowed his family from seeing the body and inviting forensic doctor to do an investigation. At the time of this report, his family still does not know the whereabouts of his body.
