A brief report of the incident:

On January 19, 2001, Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Fang Xianzhi was told to go to Dongshun police station in Chengdu City.  He was arrested there on the excuse that his 86 year-old-mother once went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. He was sent to No. 1 Detention Center of Chengdu City afterwards, and was detained there without any further accusations.

On January 31, 2001, Mr. Fang’s family was suddenly notified by Dongshun police station to go to a hospital near NingXia Street (where the No. 1 Detention Center is) to see Mr. Fang. When the family arrived there, Mr. Fang was already comatose. The policeman asked Fang’s daughter to sign a release form. Upon seeing how terribly his father had been tortured, she refused to sign the form. In the morning of February 2, 2001, Mr. Fang died.

Mr. Fang’s funeral notice could not be publicly posted and family visitors needed to be questioned by the Chengdu city police. The Chengdu police prohibited contact between Fang’s family and other Falun Gong practitioners. The funeral attendees were forced to register and were followed by police to the funeral.
