Description:

Since the persecution of Falun Gong started in 1999, Mr. Yang Jianpo has been repeatedly arrested, sent to forced labor camps and severely tortured because he practices Falun Gong and has been informing people about the persecution. In 2004, after extensive torture, his weight dropped to just over 40 kilos (88 pounds), and he became emaciated. On February 5, 2006, Mr. Yang Jianpo was arrested once again when he told local officials about practitioner Mr. Wang Shaoqiu's family’s economic difficulties. Mr. Wang had been detained for practicing Falun Gong.

Mr. Yang went on a hunger strike on the first day of his detention to protest. Four months later when he was extremely weak, Langfang local officials secretly sentenced him to six years in prison without due process. Mr. Yang was then taken to the Tangshan Jidong Prison.

On May 28, 2006, Mr. Yang’s wife, Ms. Nie Chunling, received a notice from the central hospital of Jidong Prison, Team No. 4, Fengnan District, Tangshan. At that time, Langfang City Hospital, Central Hospital, and Guangyang District Hospital had issued several critically ill notices. Mr. Yang could not take care of himself. Under the current Chinese law, critically ill inmates have to be released from prison; but the officials kept him in prison in spite of his condition.

In June 2006, when the family visited him in prison, inmates brought him out in a cart. His eyes were unfocused and he could barely talk. He was skin and bones. His hands and feet were cold and he was extremely pale.

Mr. Yang’s family was very worried; his elderly parents were so worried that they could not sleep. On November 30, 2006 his wife, Ms. Nie went with her nephew and brother-in-law to Jidong Prison and asked to visit him. Police refused them. They asked how Mr. Yang was doing. Li Zhengyun, the political commissar of the prison hospital, dodged the question and said, "Same thing." Other officials tried to avoid the family, and they even called local police to take them away.

Ms. Nie went with her children to the Jidong Prison Hospital more than ten times and asked for her husband's release. They neither released him, nor would they let her see him. Whenever she asked about his condition, they responded, "Very well," and "We will notify you if anything goes wrong." Before the new year of 2007, police rushed to Ms. Nie’s home and asked her to sign a document for "release on bail for medical treatment." They said they would bring him in a few days, but he was still not released. After the Chinese New Year, on February 27, 2007, Ms. Nie went with her two children to Jidong Prison and requested a visit, which was denied. She asked why they had not brought him home as promised. Hao Baoxin, the leader of Team No. 4 said that Yang Jianpo was indeed in critical condition before the Chinese New Year, but then doctors treated him and he was all right. They asked Ms. Nie to go home.

Later, Ms. Nie was informed by someone out of jail about Mr. Yang, he was on life-support. He would not be able live if the oxygen pipe would be removed. Mr.Yang’s current situation is still unknown.
