Mr. Yu started practicing Falun Gong in early 1998. At that time, he was the main income earner for his family. He was young, vigorous and healthy.
In July 2000, for practicing Falun Gong he was detained at the Shulan City Detention Center for seven days until his family bailed him out.
In November 2000, Mr. Yu was arrested again and then sentenced to two years of forced labor. He was detained first at the Weizigou Labor Camp in Changchun City. As soon as he entered the room, under the order of authorities, several criminal detainees beat and kicked him until he lost consciousness.
In early 2001, Mr. Yu was transferred to the Chaoyanggou Labor Camp in Changchun City. Again he was subjected to various tortures, including starvation, slave labor for long hours, beatings, sleep deprivation, brainwashing, threats, and more. As a result he became emaciated.
On one occasion a drug addict, Xu Hui beat Mr. Yu more than twenty times with a bed board that was more than a yard long and about eight inches wide. Mr. Yu's buttocks were wounded, with strips of flesh ripped off of them. It took more than a year for the wounds to heal.
Mr. Yu was tortured so badly that he could neither walk nor take care of himself. Moreover, he was forced to give up his belief in Falun Gong. He became more and more depressed and emaciated day by day. He coughed at night and experienced abnormal night sweating due to his general debility. Later, he did not even have the strength to walk up or down stairs. He panted even when he was crawling up one staircase and his back was bent from constant coughing. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis, was only skin and bones and on the brink of death.
Mr. Yu finally returned home in early May 2001. Because of his serious illness he was bedridden for one year. More than 5,000 Yuan was spent on medicine for him before his condition started to improve. However his illness recurred. In four years he suffered from many illnesses and spent a total of more than 10,000 Yuan for medicine. Eventually, Mr. Yu died on March 10, 2007. He left behind his wife and two young children.
