Torture Methods

1. Pushing: The victim's mouth is sealed with tape, and they are forced to lie face down with the chest touching the floor; the head is pressed to the floor by a chair with a person sitting on it; the victim's arms are held to their sides, then roughly pushed forward to form a 180° arc up over their back and down to the floor in front of the head.
2. Splitting: Splitting the fingers and toes with hard implements.
3. Bending: Bending the victim's legs in painful positions.
4. "Counting Ribs": A hard object is used to painfully poke the ribs one by one.
5. Chopping: Chopping the victim's neck with a wooden board.
6.  "Hammering": Repeatedly striking the victim' back with the legs of a stool.
7. Electric Shock: Electric batons are used to shock the victim' body, including the genital area. If the area is burned from the shock, then hot water is poured over the body and the shocks are resumed when the water cools down.
8. Whipping: A rubber baton is used to whip the victim' head; a strip of rubber is used for whipping the entire body.
9. Piercing: Piercing the body with needles.
10. Slapping: Brutally slapping the face.
11. Punching and Kicking: heavy shoes are worn when kicking victim.
12. Freezing: Forcing victims to stay outside for long period of time in the icy cold winter.
13. Hanging: Victim are handcuffed and hung from a bunk bed for several days. They are often prohibited from closing their eyes during this time.
14. Torture with Rats: Rats are put into victim’ pants, and the pants tied closed so that the rats will bite them.
15. Twisting: Toothbrush handles are placed between the fingers, and the victim' hand is clamped tightly; the toothbrushes are roughly twisted until the flesh on the fingers is torn. Often, the bone is exposed by this torture.
16. Squatting: Victims are forced to squat inside a square-foot tile for long periods of time.
17. Brushing: The victim's back of the neck is rubbed with a wooden block until swollen, and then a toothbrush is used to rub the area until it is raw and bloody.
18. Pinching: The guards wear rubber gloves and pinch the victim' testicles.
19. Elbowing: Hitting the chest with the elbows.
20. Smearing the eyelids with hot pepper powder: this is often done to keep victim from asleep.
21. Force-feeding: Some practitioners who are protesting the persecution by staging hunger strikes are force-fed with mustard oil through their nostrils. Highly salted food and concentrated saltwater solutions are also administered.
22. "Drumming": The victim's entire body is repeatedly struck with a heavy object wrapped in wool yarn.
23. Hanging: Victims are hung from the bunk beds by their hands so that only their toes can touch the ground; or victims are forced to sit on an iron chair with their arms and legs strapped down to it.
24. Breaking: Arms, legs, and fingers: The guards pull victim' fingers or limbs forcefully, resulting in broken bones.
25. Forced Squatting: Victims are forced to squat on a piece of brick measuring 30 square centimeters. The hands have to be turned backwards and pressed onto the brick while the feet are kept together and the head is lifted, and only the toes are left touching the ground.
26. Cold water torture: Victims are thrown into a vat of extremely cold water or forced to stand under water faucets to be doused with cold water.
27. Burning: The guards burn victim's body hair and fingernails using cigarette lighters.
28. Shocking with electric batons: The guards shock sensitive parts of victim' bodies including their eyes and genitals.

Victim List:

1. Mr. Li Guoyou 李国友 was a lecturer from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. He was abducted while on his way to visit another practitioner detained in Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. He was sentenced to two years of forced labor and sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. In the middle of March 2005, Mr. Li Guoyou was transferred to the 5th Team in the labor camp. The policeman Zhao Shuang interrogated Mr. Li and mocked him while holding his chin. Mr. Li asked him “What are you doing?” Hearing this, Zhao Shuang slapped Li Guoyou's face and shocked him with an electric baton.
2. Mr. Zhang Siyuan张思远was severely beaten. The perpetrators tried to force him to write a statement to denounce Falun Gong. The beating was so cruel that Mr. Zhang Siyuan became incontinent (urination and defecation) during the torture session.
3. Mr. Zhou Peihong周培红was tortured while the police, including Zhao Shuang, education instructor Wang Kai, deputy head of 5th Team Qiang Shengguo, and inmates tried to force Mr. Zhou to write a statement to denounce Falun Gong. Mr. Zhou was tied to an iron chair, shocked with electric batons, and beaten by inmate Qi Kunlei. Mr. Zhou was tortured around the clock day after day and deprived of sleep. Whenever he became sleepy, the perpetrators used hard objects to hit him on his head and on wounded parts of his body.
4. On the morning of March 27, 2005, Mr. Sun Peichen孙培臣, Mr. Li Qingrong李庆荣, Mr. Zhang Fengtian张丰田, and Mr. Xu Guoxiang 徐国祥shouted a pro-Falun Gong statement in the cafeteria of the labor camp. The police took Mr. Sun away to their office. They forcefully stripped his clothes off. The policeman Zhao Shuang covered his hands with a plastic bag and then he fiercely pulled and squeezed Mr. Sun’s genitals. Zhao Shuang also sat on him and forcefully twisted his joints. The perpetrators shocked his sensitive parts, including his genitals, with electric batons. After the torture, they forced Mr. Sun to walk into the workshop in the labor camp naked. Practitioner Mr. Song Guohua 宋国华saw this and tried to stop them, but was taken away. Mr. Song was also stripped of his clothes and shocked with electric batons. Mr. Zhang was subjected to the same torture. Mr. Li was transferred to the 1st Team of the labor camp.
5. The policeman Zhao Shuang set up a rule that no practitioner in 5th Team could talk, and that they should behave as mutes. Practitioner Mr. Chu Jinyuan 初敬元was suspected of having talked with other people. Inmate Sun Ye孙也punched Mr. Chu’s head six to seven times consecutively, and did not allow him to explain. When another practitioner, Mr. Xu Changfa 徐长发, tried to explain something to him, Sun Ye immediately punched Mr. Xu in his face 7–8 times. Mr. Xu’s face became swollen.
6. Mr. Tang Shaoyong 唐绍勇was tortured. Police Zhao Shuang shocked him with electric batons, and slapped him so hard that it caused Mr. Tang’s eardrum to bleed.
7. On May 23, 2004, Mr. Xu Guoxiang 徐国祥was arrested for possessing Falun Gong information materials when he was on his way to work. He was detained and tortured in the Xiangfang Detention Center of Harbin Railroad for two months. He had a high fever, lost consciousness occasionally, and was diagnosed with a lung infection. The detention center refused to release him on bail for medical treatment, and sent Mr. Xu to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp for a two-year term. The camp does not allow Mr. Xu’s family to visit him.
8. Mr. Liu Quan'guo柳全国is from Handian Town, Shuangcheng City of Heilongjiang Province. On February 28, 2004, the secretary of the Communist Party in Handian Town Politics and Judiciary Committee, Sun Jihua, together with policemen Zhan Jun and Sui Guangcheng from Handian Town Police Station, abducted Mr. Liu from his home and sentenced him to three years of forced labor. Mr. Liu is detained at Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. In the labor camp, he has been forced into a big water jar and had cold water poured on him because he refused to write a statement to denounce Falun Gong.
9. Mr. Shi Xiaochun史晓春, 46-year-old, is from Jidong City of Heilongjiang Province. On June 13, 2005, he was reported while talking about the truth of the persecution of Falun Gong to the people on the train from Jidong City to Changchun City. He was detained more than 20 days in Harbin Railroad Detention Center, and then transferred to the Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. Two days later, he was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp.
10. Mr. Hong Baojia 洪宝家is from Xinxing Village, Shuangcheng City of Heilongjiang Province. On December 12, 2004, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong practitioners’ human rights. He was detained for 15 days. Later, he was reported while attending his son’s wedding. He was beaten at the Xinxing Village Police Station before being transferred to Shuangcheng City 2nd Detention Center. He was sentenced to three years of forced labor and sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. His wife, Ms. Mu Xiuqing木秀清, is detained at Wanjia Forced Labor Camp.
11. Mr. Hong Wu洪武, a 58-year-old, is from Zhi'an Village, Tongxin Town, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province. On April 6, 2004, Mr. Hong was arrested by the Zhanqian Police Station in Harbin City when he was talking with the public about the truth of the persecution. He was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp.
12. Mr. Zhang Fengtian 张丰田, a 50-year-old, is from Dengjiatun, Aiguo Village, Jincheng Town, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province. On March 15, 2004, he was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp, where he was brutally tortured. The deputy head of 3rd Team, Ji Zhiwei, incited the inmates to strip his clothes off, put him into a big water jar, and pour cold water on him. Mr. Zhang was also subjected to other types of torture: long-term forced standing and squatting and be sleep deprivation. Mr. Zhang was transferred to the 5th Team, whose head is Zhao Shuang.
13. Mr. Wang Shiwei 王世伟, a 48-year-old, is from Chaoyang Village, Shuangcheng City of Heilongjiang Province. On March 15, 2004, he was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. He was forced into a big water jar and cold water was poured on him for not writing a statement to denounce Falun Gong. On October 11, 2004, the perpetrators kicked his leg and fractured his leg bone. In December 2004, inmate Wang Rong beat Mr. Wang and broke his nose. His eyesight was impaired due to the torture. The labor camp does not allow his family to visit him.
14. Mr. He Yaoduo 何耀铎 is from Minqing Village, Niujia Town, Wuchang County, Heilongjiang Province. Around 11 a.m. on March 18, 2005, Zhan Zhigang from the National Security Team of Wuchang County, Mo Zhenshan from Wuchang County 610 office, official Wang Changjiang from Niujia Town government, and Liang Chunxu from Niujia Town Police Station abducted Mr. He and sent him to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp for a one-year term.
15. Mr. Shi Zuosheng 石佐生is from Qingling Village, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province. On November 9, 2004, Mr. Shi was arrested for talking to the public about the truth of the persecution of Falun Gong. He is detained at Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. His wife, Ms. Zhang Shufen张淑芬, also a Falun Gong practitioner, is detained in the Harbin Women’s Prison for a six-year term. On January 4, 2005, he was tortured for not writing a statement as the head of 5th Team Zhao Shuang required. Zhao Shuang tied him up on an iron chair, used two electric batons (one on Mr. Shi’s genitals) to shock him for 30 minutes. The torture caused Mr. Shi to have symptoms of mental disorder. He was locked into a confinement cell and tied to an iron chair for seven consecutive days. The perpetrators used an iron lock to repeatedly hit Mr. Shi’s feet, punched his throat, kicked his head with leather boots, and tied him on a bed for another eight days.
16. Mr. Wang Dechen 王德臣, a 50-year-old, is from Xinhua Town, Acheng City, Heilongjiang Province. On the night of August 15, 2004, Mr. Wang was reported on while he was on his way to Xiaoling Town, Acheng City. The Acheng Police Station and the 610 Office interrogated him using torture. After several days of detention in Acheng City Detention Center, Mr. Wang was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp for a two-year term.
17. Mr. He Yunshun郝运书, a 51-year-old, is from Yilan. The head of 5th Team, Zhao Shuang, shocked him with an electric baton. Once, because Mr. He spoke a few words with others, education instructor Yang Yu dragged him outside and beat him.
18. Mr. Zhang Baoquan张保全, a 50-year-old, is from Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. Sometime between July and August 2003, he was abducted and sent to the Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. At the end of June 2004, he had symptoms of high blood pressure due to prolonged torture, and was unable to do labor. To persecute him, the police forced him to sit between two machines that made a very loud noise.
19. Mr. Li Wansuo李万锁, in his 50s, is a peasant from Bin County. He is deaf. At the end of April 2003, policeman Zhao Shuang made fun of him by slapping his ears. In February 2004, he was starved, but still forced to do hard labor. In April 2004, his waist was so severely injured from torture that he could not even take care of his daily needs.
20. Mr. Pu Wansheng 朴万胜, a 34-year-old, is from Mingxing Village, Hongqi Town, Nangang District of Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. His wife, Ms. Wang Shumin王淑敏, is 40 years old. On January 9, 2005, the Harbin Power Bureau ransacked the couple’s home. The couple was detained and sentenced to three years of forced labor. Mr. Pu was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp, and Ms. Wang was sent to Wanjia Forced Labor Camp in Harbin City. They have a 15-year-old son who must now live alone at their home.
21. Mr. Yao Shiguo 姚士国 was tortured so brutally that his eyesight was lost and he is unable to take care himself.
22. Mr. Sun Kaiqing孙开清, a 50-year-old, was an employee of Harbin City Normal University. On September 19, 2004 when talking with people about the truth of Falun Gong in Qingbin Park, Mr. Sun was abducted by police of the Nangang Police Department in Harbin City. The perpetrators failed to force him to write a statement to denounce Falun Gong; then they sent him to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. In the labor camp, Mr. Sun prepared to file an appeal for his case and expose the maltreatment in the labor camp. Consequently, he was subjected to even more intensified persecution.
23. Mr. Si Kuangyuan 司旷远 was a student at Harbin Institute of Technology. On February 6, 2002, he was abducted and detained at Harbin City 2nd Detention Center. On March 20, 2002, he was sentenced to three years of forced labor. On October 9, 2003, he lost his eyesight while doing labor at the labor camp. He was diagnosed with bleeding under the eyes. The labor camp refused to release him on bail for medical treatment.

Released Victims:

1. Mr. Liu Zhihong刘志洪 is from Dongli Village, Dongguan Town, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province. He had been sentenced to two and a half years in Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. He was released and went back home in September 2005. On October 11, 2005, the head of Dongguan Town Police Station, Su Yongsheng, arrested him and ransacked his home. Mr. Liu is currently detained at Shuangcheng Detention Center.
2. Mr. Cui Guang 崔广 is from Yanshou area, Heilongjiang Province. On April 1, 2005, Mr. Cui was tortured for not writing a statement to denounce Falun Gong. He was tied to a “tiger bench” (a torture instrument) for seven days; his mouth was stuffed with stinky socks and sealed with tape. Once he suffered a mental collapse due to the persecution in the labor camp. On June 10, 2005, Mr. Cui was released.
3. Mr. Li Peisheng 李佩胜 is 39 years old. In 2002 he was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. In August 2004, the labor camp sent him home after he was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and was on the brink of death. Even after half a year's meticulous care at home, his weight was still only about 78 pounds. Currently, Mr. Li is still bedridden. In order to examine Mr. Li's physical condition, doctors operated on his lower abdomen and found that Mr. Li's intestines were fragmented and appeared blackish. Also, Mr. Li's lung lobes appeared blackish as well. Mr. Li looks just like a skeleton.
