Ms. Rao Mianhua, age 42, resident of Jianjialin Village, Wuxue City, Hubei Province.
In 2000 and 2001, Ms. Rao went to Beijing twice to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong. Both times, she was detained and sent to the Shizishan Labor Camp (also known as the Shizishan Drug Rehabilitation Center) in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. In the labor camp, Ms. Rao suffered inhumane torture. The guards often had other inmates insult and beat her. Camp guards shocked her using high-voltage electric batons. In the extremely hot summer (at 104 Degreed), camp guards forced Falun Gong practitioners, including Ms. Rao, to pose in and hold military positions or to stand on one foot under the hot sun.[J1] If they moved, they would be beaten up. They were prohibited from drinking water or using the toilet. Due to such torture, Ms. Rao often sweated profusely and her whole body became numb. She gradually lost feeling in her legs and her eyesight became worse as well. Finally, in 2001, the camp officials sent her home to avoid responsibility. By then Ms. Rao was already blind and had become paralyzed from the waist down.
After her release, Ms. Rao had to rely on a wheel chair to move around. She published an article about her suffering on an oversea website. As a result, officers from the “610 Office” kept harassing her and the local police from the Qinglin Police Station publicly threatened to arrest her.

From June 14 to June 16, 2005, Ms. Rao went to the Wuxue City Police Bureau, the Wuxue City “610 Office” and the Qinglin Police Station three times to appeal and asked them to return her belongings. As a result, she was detained again. While in detention, Ms. Rao went on a hunger strike refusing both food and water. She was released in an emaciated state.
