Ms. Yuan Lin, female, 48, is an instructor at the Graduate School of Beijing University. In December 2001, Ms. Yuan was arrested while she was preparing Falun Gong material. For the first month, she was held in a detention center where police and criminals tortured her and cruelly force-fed her. After every force-feeding, they stepped on her abdomen. A month later, she was sent to Beijing's Daxing Law Training Center, which is actually a brainwashing facility where the police incite the guards to beat and try to deceive Falun Gong practitioners. They often interrogate practitioners throughout the night and will not allow them to sleep. Eight officers, who rotate their shift every two hours, monitor each Falun Gong practitioner. These policemen are not allowed to talk to the practitioners. They record the behavior of each practitioner, such as turning round, standing up, sitting down, opening their eyes, going to the washroom, etc. Most of the police treat the practitioners savagely; even the practitioners who are extremely weak from long hunger strikes are not permitted to lie down. A thick, dark blind that lets in no sunlight covers each window. A weak yellow lamp is the only light in the room. A filthy, smelly quilt covers the wooden bed. The practitioners who are detained in this center suffer all kinds of torture.
Ms. Yuan was regarded as a key figure. Police Team Leader Li and several guards from Xinan Labor Camp of Shanxi Province cruelly beat, tortured and brainwashed her. Every night she was only allowed to sleep for one or two hours. Li and the guards beat Ms. Yuan with heavy books, which caused her face and mouth to swell alarmingly. They punched and kicked her, targeting her private parts. Ms. Yuan was often knocked to the ground and was unable to move. When Li deemed even this punishment insufficient, she tried even more brutal torture, such as knocking Ms. Yuan to the ground and stomping on her legs. Seeing that she still did not yield, Li directed her torturers to use their elbows to press the acupuncture points all over Ms. Yuan's body. This torture leaves no visible wounds because the injuries are internal. After each session of this torture Ms. Yuan was unable even to turn over. They forced her to squat down and lower her head, which caused her whole body to swell. Her feet would swell so severely that she could not put on her shoes. One day, as she counted, they slapped her face over one hundred times. She was beaten unconsciousness, her heart barely beating. In spite of this, in order to force her to give up Falun Gong, they used even more cruel torture such as not allowing her to sleep or use the restroom, and also extortion. A month later Ms. Yuan was transferred to Section 7 of the Beijing Security Department to be detained secretly where she engaged in hunger strikes for several months. After each of her three hunger strikes, she was sent to a Beijing police hospital. In the hospital her hands and feet were cuffed to the bed. For two months she had a single tube inserted into her nose through which she was force-fed and infused everyday. Her tube was never changed. After the tube was finally pulled out, it had turned black. In the hospital, practitioners who refused to cooperate had their hands and feet cuffed to their beds so securely by the police and nurses that they couldn't move an inch. Nasal tubes and catheters were roughly inserted and infusions and force-feedings were carried out brutally. The nurses used wide tape to confine practitioners' fingers and toes. Some nurses beat and pinched practitioners. Many practitioners are being detained in the basement of the Beijing Police Hospital. Here police have adopted savage methods of force-feeding to deal with these long-term hunger striking practitioners, keeping them alive but causing them to suffer acutely. Police from Section 7 were fed up with Ms. Yuan's hunger strikes. When the hospital asked them to pick her up, the police did not come for two months. At the beginning of June, the police finally took Ms. Yuan away for the second time. She was cuffed and had a nasal tube inserted when she arrived at the detention center of Section 7 located in Changping. Police cuffed her hands behind her back and force-fed her through the nasal tube. Even when she had diarrhea, the police did not release her from her handcuffs. They ordered other criminals to remove her pants so she could go to the restroom. The criminals cursed her. They tortured her in this way for five days. Then she was sent to the police hospital again. By this time she had become very emaciated, weighing only 40 kilograms (about 90 pounds) for her height of 1.7 meters (about 5'7"). She trembled just from walking.
