Mr. Ma Baosheng, from Zhaozhou County, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province was 35 years old and lived at the Leyuan No 4 Factory, a seed farm in Zhaozhou County  He began practicing Falun Gong in 1998.

In 1999,the formal Chinese president, Jiang Zemin started the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. In November 2000, Mr. Ma went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. Armed police officers beat him in Tiananmen Square and took him to the Zhanqian Police Department. Xu Zhigang and other officers from the Security Division of the Leyuan No. 4 Factory took Mr. Ma to the Zhaozhou County Detention Center, where they held him for one month. During this period, Dong Zhiping from the Politics and Security Division of the Zhaozhou County Police Department extorted 5,000 yuan from his family. Xu Zhigang also confiscated Mr. Ma's motorcycle, and ransacked his home.

In December 2000, Mr. Ma again went to Beijing to appeal. He was severely beaten once again in Tiananmen Square and was taken to the Chaoyang District Detention Center, where he was beaten again, thrown into a very cold room, not allowed to sleep and handcuffed with his hands behind his back. He was sent back to the Zhaozhou County Detention Center, where he began a hunger strike to protest the persecution. As punishment, guard Wang Zhong cuffed his hands and feet to a bed, pried open his mouth and poured a large amount of salt into his mouth, followed by cold water.

In early 2001, Mr. Ma was sentenced to one year of forced labor and sent to the Daqing Forced Labor Camp. He persisted in his belief in Truthfulness-Compassion- Forbearance and was thrown into a cold room and hung up with his hands tied up. As a result of the torture, he lost all feeling in his arms, but gradually recovered after three months.

After Mr. Ma's release, the local police often harassed him at his home, which caused him great distress. He could not freely do the Falun Gong exercises, and he contacted severe tuberculosis. He passed away on January 4, 2005.
