In September 2001, Ms. Liu Yazhi, from Kailu County of Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia, went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong practitioners’ human rights. She was arrested and imprisoned. The local police station even went as far as to bulldoze her house, leaving Ms. Liu’s family with no home in which to live.

Ms. Liu was imprisoned at the Inner Mongolia Public Security Prison. The police brutally tortured her following the lead of Zhou Jianhua, Deputy Head of the prison. In April 2003, Zhou Jianhua started to use forceful methods to “transform” Ms. Liu into giving up Falun Gong. The police transferred inmates from her section to other places in the prison, then they locked her in solitary confinement and forced her to listen to the loud slanderous propaganda about Falun Gong. Ms. Liu resisted and refused to listen. Five or six policemen then came in and held down her hands and legs, while another crushed her body from above. They used the quilts to cover her head to force her to turn against Falun Gong. Ms. Liu could not breathe, and her face became red and swollen. She could not open her eyes, and her hands became swollen as well.

Ms. Liu continuously suffered inhuman tortures like this over a four-day period. This lasted until she lost feeling in her lower body. She could not move, and lay in bed for more than two months. Because of this torture, she could not take care of herself, and she needed someone to carry her and help her move around. Despite her condition, Zhou Jianhua still said she was faking and continued to torture Ms. Liu.
