Ms. Zhou Changli, female, 52, was a retired worker from the No. 2 Textile Machinery factory in Changde City, Hunan Province. After she began to practice Falun Gong in 1997, her kidney condition caused by a hereditary disease affecting many of her family members disappeared, and she enjoyed much better health.

On October 25, 2000, Ms. Zhou went to Tiananmen Square to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. The police arrested her there and took her to a nearby police station. Eventually, she was escorted to the Taohuaxian Detention Center in Hunan Province. During her detention, guards beat, kicked, and abused her. Ms. Zhou suffered from acute leg pain but was still forced to plant vegetables daily in the prison yard. Ms. Zhou was detained for fifteen days, and police extorted over 6,000 Yuan from her.

In May 2001, someone reported Ms. Zhou to police, about her watching a VCD about Falun Gong. The police arrested her and detained her again in the Taohuaxian Detention Center, where they tried to force her to renounce Falun Gong. The chief of the detention center also ordered Ms. Zhou's brother and sister from Wuhan City, Hubei Province, to persuade her to give up the practice of Falun Gong.

On October 22, 2001, Ms. Zhou died as a direct result of the prolonged mental and physical torture she had endured.
