1. Zhang Hanyun, 33, resident of Hanzhong City, Shanxi Province

In March of 2000, Ms. Zhang Hanyun's pregnancy had reached full term. The Hanzhong City 610 Office (a government agency formed specifically for the purpose of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners), however, ordered her to be detained at an anti-Falun Gong brainwashing class. To avoid the persecution, Ms. Zhang hid in her relative's home. The authorities closed down the business of Ms. Zhang's father and brother and forced them to hand over Ms. Zhang. They also handcuffed Ms. Zhang's husband to the Jialing River Bridge of Hanzhong City to humiliate him in public. When the authorities eventually found, ar-rested, and forcefully sent Ms. Zhang to the brain-washing class, they took her to a hospital and used the dilation-and-extraction procedure to extract her full-term baby.

2. Liu Qiuhong, 39, employee of Zhongce Pharmacy Company, resident of Yantai City, Shandong Province

Ms. Liu Qiuhong was arrested at her home by the Zhifu District Police Station of Yantai City, merely because she practiced Falun Gong. Ms. Liu was more than eight months pregnant at the time. The police, however, tied her down and forcefully induced an early labor. The baby was born alive and healthy, and was crying when the police forced it from her womb. The authorities did not even allow Ms. Liu any time to recover. They immediately sent her to an Anti-Falun Gong Brainwashing Center for one month, and then sentenced her to a forced labor camp. No one knows what became of the child.

3. Wang Shaona, resident of Shekou District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province

On February 15, 2000, Ms. Wang Shaona and her husband went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. The couple was arrested and detained in the Shekou Detention Center. Ms. Wang was six months pregnant at the time. To "legally" detain Ms. Wang, the police subjected her to a forced abortion. On June 30, 2000, policemen from the Shuiwan Police Station arrested Ms. Wang and her husband again at their home. They were detained in the Nanshan District Detention Center. When the police found that she was pregnant, they shackled her and took her to a hospital for a second forced abortion. Later, Ms. Wang was sent to the Nanshan District Detention Center, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province.

4. Wu Jiuying, farmer, resident of Weiyuan County, Neijiang City, Sichuan Province

Ms. Wu Jiuying was arrested and sentenced to do forced labor for her practice of Falun Gong. At the time, she was seven months pregnant. To "legally" place her in the labor camp, the police forcibly drugged her to induce labor. When the police saw that Ms. Wu did not go into labor, they administered a sec-ond injection the same night. Ms. Wu's current situation is unknown.

5. Wang Hongmei, Ph. D. candidate in the History Department, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province

On June 7, 2001, police from the Lanzhou University Police Station arrested Ms. Wang Hongmei merely because she refused to stop practicing Falun Gong. She was sent to the Taoshuping Detention Center in Lanzhou City, where she went on a hunger strike to protest her detention. Because she was pregnant at the time, she was sent back to her dorm at Lanzhou University and placed under surveillance. The university authorities pressured her to renounce and defame Falun Gong. Ms. Wang refused, and as a result they escorted her back to the detention center. There the police cruelly subjected her to a forced abortion.

6. Yang Ping, 43, employee of Caidian Fishery Company, Wuhan City, Hubei Province

In March 2000, Ms. Yang Ping went to Beijing to appeal to the central government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. She was arrested and escorted back to Wuhan City. She was first detained in the Zhonghualu Police Station in Wuhan City and then in the Caidian Police Station in Wuhan City. The police at the Caidian Police Station tried to force Ms. Yang to renounce Falun Gong, Ms. Yang refused. At that time, Ms. Yang was pregnant.

In April 2000, because Ms. Yang still refused to renounce Falun Gong, the police escorted her to the Health Center for Women and Children in the Caidian District for a forced abortion. Afterwards, she was sent to the Wuhan City Drug Rehabilitation Center for one and a half years of forced labor. Even though she had just been subjected to the forced abortion, she was given cold showers and only provided with cold water to drink. The unsanitary conditions and forced labor caused her to suffer complications. She went on a hunger strike to protest her illegal detention and ill treatment. Her husband, Mr. Wang Jianjun, appealed for her, and 4,320 Yuan was extorted from him. Ms. Yang was released after 3 months of the forced labor. By that time her health had seriously deteriorated and her whole body had become swollen.

7. Wang Xia, 29, resident of Linhe City, Neimenggu Province [Inner Mongolia]

On February 19, 2000, Ms. Wang Xia was ar-rested in Beijing for appealing to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. The police escorted her back to the Linhe City Police Station. In the police station, three policemen took turns beating and interrogating her for an entire night, trying to force her to renounce Falun Gong.

The next day, Ms. Wang was shackled and escorted to the Hohhot City Women's Labor Camp. Even though Ms. Wang was already three months pregnant, she was forced to do hard labor, which included unloading 3 tons of coal or wrapping more than 10,000 pairs of chopsticks each day.

The guards in the labor camp tortured her often. Every morning Ms. Wang was handcuffed to the stair rail and forced to squat for a long time. She was often shocked with electric batons. Deputy Captain Chang Hong also ordered the guards to hang her up by her handcuffed wrists. The handcuffs made deep cuts in her skin. Though her arms turned black, cold, and numb after two hours of hanging, the police would not let her down and left her hanging for an entire day.

On July 30, 2000 when Ms. Wang was eight months pregnant, the labor camp sent her back to the Linhe City Police Station, with her hands still cuffed. The police station then subjected her to a forced abortion. The injection to induce labor did not work, how-ever. Less than a month after Ms. Wang gave birth, the police gave her an ultimatum: either write a statement renouncing Falun Gong, or lose her house. To avoid further persecution, Ms. Wang and her child were forced to become homeless.

8. Lu Yunzhen, 31, resident of Fengcheng City, Jiangxi Province

In January 2000, Ms. Lu Yunzhen was arrested in Beijing because she appealed to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. She was escorted back to Fengcheng City. Ms. Lu was pregnant at the time. In order to detain her longer, the Chief of the Fengcheng Police Station took her to the hospital. There, she was tied down and given a forced abortion.

9. Zhang Wuying, a teacher at Changzhou City's Technology Education Institute, resident of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province

Because of her refusal to renounce Falun Gong, Ms. Zhang Wuying was demoted from her teaching job to do copy work in an environment polluted with toxic fumes. She was pregnant at the time. Police from the Cuizhu Police Station often detained her at the station and forced her to stand in one place all night. Ms. Zhang and her husband went to the central government in early April 2000 to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Although she was more than 4 months pregnant, over twenty police-men beat and kicked her and her husband in front of the State Appeal's Office.

When Ms. Zhang was 5 months pregnant, Officer Li from the Cuizhu Police Station ordered the principal of her school, Li Minmin, to send her to the Military 102 Mental Hospital to have an abortion. There, she was tied to a bed, injected with a labor-inducing drug, and force-fed some unknown drugs. The forced-abortion failed.

Just before Ms. Zhang gave birth, the police detained her husband for 40 days, leaving no one to take care of her at home. Even when she gave birth to a son in a hospital at the end of August 2000, she was under constant police surveillance. On February 8, 2001, when Ms. Zhang and her husband came back from visiting their parents in Shandong Province, the Changzhou City Police arrested them at the Chang-zhou Railway Station. The police injured her son's head and legs during the forceful arrest. The police also threatened to send Ms. Zhang to a labor camp when her son reached one year of age.

1. Dou Jianhua, 28, kindergarten teacher, resident of Mishan City, Heilongjiang Province

In June 2000, Ms. Dou Jianhua went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. She was arrested and escorted back to the Beishan Detention Center in Lianzhushan Town. When the police noticed that Ms. Dou was pregnant, they forced her to load heavy bricks, which required repetitive kneeling and bending. This caused Ms. Dou massive bleeding, which resulted in a miscarriage. The police extorted 2,000 Yuan from Ms. Dou's family in exchange for her release. However, less than a week later, the police came and took Ms. Dou back to the detention center.

2. Jiang Zhongli, 25, employee of the Hengyang Blood Bank, resident of Hengyang City, Hunan Province

In January 2000, Ms. Jiang Zhongli was ar-rested for her practice of Falun Gong. She was pregnant at the time. She was detained in the Hengyang City Detention Center. To force her to renounce Falun Gong, the guards at the detention center frequently beat her. In early February 2000, the guards savagely beat Ms. Jiang again, causing her to hemorrhage and miscarry. Even then, the police refused to give Ms. Jiang any medical treatment, and they let her health deteriorate to a critical condition. Afraid that she would die in the detention center, the police extorted 1,500 Yuan from Ms. Jiang's family in exchange for her release. Ms. Jiang is currently under house arrest.

3. Wang Youxia, resident of Shangchangzhuang Village, Cuijiagu Town, Yishui County, Shandong Province

In August 2001, the Cuijiagu Town officers arrested Ms. Wang Youxia for hanging up Falun Gong banners. She was pregnant at the time. The police officers severely beat her, causing her to bleed and suffer a miscarriage. The police extorted 5,000 Yuan from her family, but they still refused to release her.
