38-year-old Mr. Chen Guanghui, is a graduate of Nanjing University. He was a department manager at the Lianyungang Branch of the Bank of Construction, as well as the assistant manager of the department of Computer Systems. Mr. Chen started to practice Falun Gong in 1995. He was a hard worker, was always glad to help others and won wide praise from his work unit.

Around July 20, 1999, Mr. Chen went to the Jiangsu provincial government in Nanjing by himself to appeal for an end of the persecution of Falun Gong. After returning to Lianyungang City, his work unit suspended him. In October 1999, the leader of his work unit requested that he renounce Falun Gong and show repentance on television. Mr. Chen simply refused. In December 1999, persons from the Lianyungang City Police Department sent him into a forced labor camp for one and half years.

After being released from the labor camp, Mr. Chen found a job in a Beijing computer joint venture company and moved to Beijing.

In June 2001 the [Falun Gong] materials production site in Beijing was reported to the police. Mr. Chen Guanghui was arrested and taken back to Lianyungang City in Jiangsu Province. On June 21, 2001, during an interrogation period, he successfully escaped. The Ministry of Public Security issued a nationwide warrant for his arrest.

In September 2001 Mr. Chen suddenly went missing. According to information obtained from his original work place, it was on September 10, 2001, that Chen Guanghui was arrested and detained. One year later, on September 12, 2002, the Nanjing City Baixia District People's Court sentenced him to eight years in prison. He was incarcerated in the Suzhou Prison.

On July 29, 2004, while still in prison, Mr. Chen was found unconscious with a severe wound on the back of his head. He was sent to the Department of Neurology in the First Hospital of Suzhou University, where he has remained unconscious and in critical condition. With a coma index of 3, he was actually already in a vegetative state. The doctors could only provide him with life support treatment and are not optimistic about his condition.

The police did not notify his family until August 4, 2004. His family came to visit him, but only under the supervision of guards from the Suzhou Prison.

There was a severe infection in his lungs, and he has a high temperature. When he  recovered a little, the supervisor from Suzhou Prison transferred him to the clinic in the prison. The conditions of the clinic are very poor and it is not equipped to handle serious conditions like his brain injury.
