Mr. Hu Qingyun had once recovered from leukemia through practicing Falun Gong. He was arrested in July 1999, because he wrote letters to state leaders on several occasions describing how Falun Gong had restored his health. Because he was not allowed to practice Falun Gong while in detention, Mr. Hu suffered a relapse of his disease. He told the police that he would die if he were not allowed to practice Falun Gong, as he was a leukemia patient. But the police responded, “We are not afraid of this leukemia threat!”

During the detention, Mr. Hu began to bleed from different parts of his body. Fearing that he would die in the detention center, the local authorities released him. Once at home and after resuming his Falun Gong practice, he recovered again from the disease. However, Mr. Hu was detained again in October 1999 because he continued to practice Falun Gong. After one year of detention, Mr. Hu was sentenced to a seven-year prison term on January 10, 2001. On March 22, 2001, Mr. Hu died from leukemia.
