In February 2000, because Ms. Mao Junhua, female, 45, a resident of Weiyuan County, Sichuan Province, went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong, she was arrested and sentenced to one-year of forced labor at the Nanmusi Women's Labor Camp, Zizhong County, Sichuan Province.

In the labor camp, guards ordered inmates to beat her. The beating was so severe that her arms were dislocated, and she had to be sent to a hospital. Then she was forced to do hard labor for more than 10 hours a day without any breaks. One night in the hot summer, inmates pushed her onto the bed and beat her. Then the inmates stuffed her mouth with dirty smelly towels, tied her arms and legs with bras, and smothered her with a heavy blanket to suffocate her. She was tortured in this way until the next morning. To protest the torture, she refused to get up in the morning to join the morning assembly. As a result, she was dragged out of her bed and scratched, pinched, and beaten everywhere. Her clothing was torn apart. Eventually, she was forcibly dragged into the workshop to do hard labor.

Another time, inmates intentionally banged Ms. Mao's head against the concrete while dragging her upstairs, causing her head to be covered with welts that were filled with blood.

In the labor camp, Ms. Mao was often beaten and shocked with electric batons, which caused her body to be covered with black and blue marks, and large bruises all over. She was forced to stand out in the sun in the summer for long periods, deprived of sleep, and not allowed to wash, or use the restroom.

Ms. Mao's jail term was extended for a half year because she refused to denounce Falun Gong. On January 28, 2002, four months after her release, Ms. Mao was again arrested because she continued practicing Falun Gong. On February 10, 2002, she was sent to the Neijiang City Detention Center for further persecution.

On December 25, 2002, Ms. Mao was released from the detention center, and sent to a brainwashing center. She was forced to watch and listen to the video materials slandering Falun Gong. She was often deprived of sleep, and beaten by the guards. She was released after three months of mental and physical torture.

During her detention, Ms. Mao was forced to divorce her husband.

Ms. Mao's appearance changed dramatically for the worse. When she went home, many of her friends and relatives could not even recognize her.
