Ms. Deng Meijuan, female, is a resident of Nanying Town, Gaocheng City, Hebei Province. Ms. Deng went to Beijing twice to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong.  Each time, the police from the Nanying Town Police Station escorted Ms. Deng back to Nanying Town, first on March 14, 2000 and again on June 11, 2000. She was detained for 45 days and 70 days, respectively, in the Gaocheng City Detention Center. On December 27, 2000, Ms. Deng went to Beijing to appeal again, and was arrested and detained for 23 days in the Yanshan Detention Center in Fangshan District, Beijing, where she went on a hunger strike to protest the detention. She was brutally force-fed every day, causing her to develop haematemesis and low blood pressure, leaving her in critical condition. She was released in February 2001. After Ms. Deng returned home, the police tried to arrest her several times, but she escaped under the protection of her family members. In July 2002, police from the Nanying Town Police Station tried to send her to a brainwashing session, disregarding her pregnancy. Ms. Deng escaped on the way to the brainwashing session, and became homeless in order to avoid further persecution. On January 1, 2003, two months after Ms. Deng gave birth, the police found her living place and forced her and her newborn baby to attend a brainwashing session. Since the weather was very cold, Ms. Deng’s baby developed a high fever and was in critical condition. The police finally sent them to a hospital, where the baby was diagnosed as having pneumonia. To avoid responsibility, the police left her and her child in the hospital unattended. Ms. Deng and her baby escaped from the hospital and wandered on the streets again to avoid further persecution.
